By the end of Kindergarten, children can usually write at least one sentence. In first grade, children are encouraged to write multiple sentences to develop one main idea. The students write daily. Often the writing is of their own choice, but writing also occurs in the content areas.
The word wall is a very important tool for young writers. By the end of the year, about 100 words will be on the wall. These words are used as a large visual dictionary, a resource that the students can easily access. Students are also expected to spell the core list of fifteen basic sight words. Those words are: a, and, are, for, he, of, on, in, is, it, that, the, to, you, was.
