Once children can quickly recognize common sight words, their reading becomes more fluent. Less time is spent on decoding and more time is given to comprehension. Being able to read a set of these common sight words helps children become more confident and allows them to become risk takers when decoding other more difficult words. Knowledge of basic words and word structure allows children to make important generalizations about other words. For children who can read basic sight words, reading becomes more enjoyable and attainable. By the end of the year, first graders should be able to read all of the words on the list below. These words are common sight words found in many of the books that the children read. The words are also helpful to use when writing. All of these words will be on our word wall by the end of the year.
